TASK 2 PART A

EDUCATION

E-learning has become a necessity nowadays. Look at the list below and decide which kind of learning is the most effective and why?

e-learning            traditional learning            homeschooling

E-learning

Advantages
Disadvantages
  • convenience and availability 24/7
  • no need to commute
  • flexibility
  • long hours spent in front of the screen
  • contributes to sedentary lifestyle
  • negative for eyesight
  • cheaper to organise
  • available for the disabled and otherwise home-bound people
  • time-saving
  • requires stable Internet connection and access to equipment
  • lack of contact with people (other students and teachers)
  • some subjects need practical hands-on learning which is impossible online
  • interesting and varied web-based materials and resources
  • less formalised
  • less control over students
  • more suitable for specialised than general education
  • requires access to and ability to use technology
  • it is more difficult to accurately assess progress

Traditional learning

Advantages
Disadvantages
  • free state education for every citizen is a constitutional right
  • available for everyone
  • mass character
  • congested classrooms and schools
  • shifts, long school days, poor schedules
  • standardised and controlled by the state
  • one system for all which does not take into account individual needs and differences
  • contact with people
  • socialisation
  • bullying
  • aggression
  • violence

Homeschooling

Advantages
Disadvantages
  • adjusted to a child’s individual needs
  • one-to-one
  • children can work in their own pace
  • lack of diversity and contact with children from different backgrounds
  • more flexible
  • more family time
  • school social problems eliminated
  • lack of daily socialisation with peers
  • parents need to become teachers
  • lack of resources used by schools
  • cost-effective (less expenditure on school supply lists, commuting, school trips)
  • difficult to transition back to traditional schooling after homeschooling

TASK 2 PART B
  1. What do you think of the teaching profession? Can anyone become a good teacher?
  2. What are the pluses and minuses of the current education system in your country?
  3. At what age should children start school education? Why?
